Thanks to its location, natural conditions, diverse spots and accessibility, the Liberec Region is a unique destination for active holidays for all age groups throughout the year.

Summer season
The summer season is the ideal time for walking and cycling. There are currently 138 marked cycle paths of varying demands in the region, distancing a total of 2,230 km. For recreational cyclists and families with children, a good place for active relaxation would be in the gentle hilled countryside of Mácha’s region and Bohemian Paradise. Proficient cyclists on the other hand can make use of the mountain trails which tackle the peaks of the Giant Mountains, Jizera Mountains and Lusatian Mountains. Many of the names of the trails suggest that in the Liberec region there is something for everyone – Smuggler´s trail (Pašerácká cyklotrasa), Sunny trail (Slunečná cyklostrasa), Comfortable trail (Pohodová cyklotrasa), Warm-Up trail (Zahřívací) or Time-Trial trail (Časovka). Beautiful views and undemanding long valley descents lure cyclists to the Giant Mountains. The highest mountain in the Jizera Mountains, Smrk, offers the first single track mountain bike trail in the country, which follows existing trails and is intended for recreational terrain cyclists. The Liberec Region offers transportation of bicycles in bike buses that will deliver you comfortably to your destination.

Hiking and hill walking are very popular summer activities. Hikers can make use of the dense network of marked footpaths. The Czech signposting system is a world famous concept - it is standard throughout the whole of the Czech Republic and has been tested through decades. In the Jizera Mountains the project “the Jizera Mountain hiking track” (Jizerská magistrála) has been implemented with the purpose of increasing the comfort of movement for walkers and opening up the lesser known places in these mountains. The Giant Mountains offer hikes with stunning views, a number of waterfalls and a landscape of high mountainous terrain. Hiking lovers should not miss out on a trip to Bohemian Paradise, with its sandstone rock cities and an abundance of chateaus and castles.

Fans of in-line skating can also find a wide choice of tracks intended for skaters in the Liberec Region. In the Česká Lípa Region, for example, you can find the new cycle path named Varhany or paths following the river Ploučnice.

The Liberec Region is geared up for rock climbing fans and has a rich choice of possibilities. You will find yourself hard pushed to choose from the popular sandstone rocks in places such as Hruboskalsko, Prachovské skály and Suché skály. You could even head for the secluded granite spots of the Jizera Mountains. Climbing walls can be used during bad weather.

Adrenaline pursuits fall among the most favourite of summer activities. Rope climbing centres in Harrachov, Heřmanice v Podještědí, Nová Ves or Malá Skála offer rope obstacles of varying difficulties and attractions for adults and children. Whenever you wish to take a ride on a bobsleigh run, visit Janov nad Nisou, Harrachov, or you can try the bobsleigh run in Javorník, in the vicinity of Liberec. Paragliding, tandem ski-dives, power-kiting, sightseeing flights and rafting are just some of the other activities that make the Liberec Region an attractive holiday destination.

An active holiday in the countryside can also include swimming in both natural and indoor pools, fishing, horse riding and playing golf or tennis. Excellent conditions for a lakeside holiday and water sports are offered at Mácha´s Lake, Kristýna or Hamr na Jezeře. The Liberec Region boasts seven golf courses suitable for complete beginners and professional players.

Winter season
The Liberec Region is ideal for winter sports thanks to its predominantly mountainous character. The districts of the Giant Mountains, Jizera Mountains, Ještěd Ridge and Lusatian Mountains offer visitors a range of ways to actively spend their winter holiday.

The Giant Mountains, the highest range in the Czech Republic, is the most visited ski destination. Devotees of downhill skiing and snowboarding appreciate the wide choice of well prepared pistes and the well equipped ski resorts in Špindlerov Mlýn, Pec pod Sněžkou, Rokytnice nad Jizerou and Harrachov. For those who prefer cross-country skiing, the Giant Mountains offer hundreds of kilometres of prepared ski tracks. Snowtubing, sledging, snowmobiling and husky safaris are also on offer. The quality of the ski resorts in the Giant Mountains is confirmed by the hosting of the Ski Jumping World Cup at ski jumps in Harrachov, where the world ski jumping elite compete each year.

The Jizera Mountains are popular among cross-country skiers. More than 170 km of cross-country ski tracks are prepared for classical skiing and skating. One of the most popular cross country ski routes in the Czech Republic, the Jizerská magistrála, has 23 starting points and its tracks bring you to every corner of the mountains, its nature reserve, view towers and reservoirs. Since 1968, an international long-distance 50km ski race, the Jizerska 50, has been taking place, which constitutes part of the world league in Nordic distance skiing – Worldloppet. The Jizera Mountains are not just a paradise reserved for cross-country skiers, for they also welcome downhill skiers and snowboarders. Tanvaldský Špičák, Rejdice and Bedřichov or Janov nad Nisou are just some of the ski centres in the Jizera Mountains which offer downhill pistes for beginners and experienced skiers. In Bedřichov it is possible to try a down hill decent in a kayak or raft, or even snowkiting – the combined use of a snowboard and kite.

The Lusation Mountains offer good quality ski conditions in addition to the Jizera and Giant Mountains. Prepared cross-country ski tracks are to be found at Polevsko and a number of ski centres can be found at Jedlová hora and Horní Světlá, for example, and also at Polevsko. In terms of demand, these pistes appeal more to beginners and children. For more competent downhill skiers, pistes are prepared on Ještěd, spreading from Černý Vrch. The local ski centre offers ski lovers pistes of varying difficulties, a number of ski lifts and night skiing, along with a children’s lift and a ski school.

In winter season, both the Giant Mountains and the Jizera Mountains provide ski-buses that will take you to the required mountain resorts.

The city of Liberec can boast of the modern cross-country ski centre in Vesec, which, alongside with the ski-jump centre on Ještěd, hosted the Nordic Ski Championship 2009, the Games of Youth Winter Olympics 2010, or the European Youth Olympic Winter Festival EYOWF 2011. The resort Břízky in Jablonec nad Nisou provides maintained cross-country ski trails including an illuminated ring for night skiing.

In 2010, a new sport resort was established in the village of Jeřmanice, near Liberec. Apart from a bobsleigh run you can use a four-person chairlift, a ski-run for beginners, a snowpark, and a ski-cross slope.
